Are you desperate for a
night out, but can't find someone to look after your children?
We are a small group of school mums who operate a token system for
babysitting within the local area. Each person is given a certain
amount of hours and a list of phone numbers. If you need a sitter,
then all you have to do is lift the phone and call to see who can
make the date you need. No money is exchanged - what could be
simpler!! The circle can also be used during the day if you need
to attend an appointment without taking small children along. If we
get some new members we will have a get together so that you can
meet everyone on the list.
See the Village News for further details.
In October 2004, we
held an excellent circus workshop, where the girls were able to
learn the basic skills and allowed them to complete their badge in
this discipline. This then led on to our performance in the village
talent show, where we performed two clown acts, a gymnastic hoop
routine, a tightrope walker, ballet dancers and a variety of
skills like juggling, stilts and pedal-go.
We finished the term off with a fantastic Christmas party, where the
Brownies had fun with nail painting, hair, make-up and balloon
modelling, followed by a yummy feast and dancing.
We welcomed two new Brownies at the beginning of 2005 maintaining
our maximum capacity. During January we have been busy doing our
‘Friends to Animals’ badge. At one of the meetings the girls were
allowed to bring a pet in and give a short talk about how to care
for them. They were also allowed to hold some guinea pigs. The
greatest excitement came in the last 10 minutes when we were visited
by 3 dogs!!!
Later this term we are visiting the Diamond Riding School for the
disabled. This will be in conjunction with our work on understanding
those with disabilities.
We also have to fit in Thinking Day, Pancake Day, Valentines,
Mothers Day, Easter.........................!!!

Monday, April 11th we have ‘Western Style’ music with the two Davids.
On Monday, May 8th we have booked John Capon from Redhill who will
show the second part of the “Jubilee Years History of Redhlll”.
We have had the pleasure of welcoming some new members over the past
year. Many have read about the CAMEO CLUB in the Village News. We
warmly invite you to come along and join us on the second Monday
afternoon at 2:00 pm each month. The meetings are held at the Lower
Kingswood Evangelical Free Church, Smithy Lane and are very
informal, finishing with a tea. The CAMEO Club is open to both men
and women. If you enjoy meeting friends in the Village and
surrounding areas, this is the meeting for you.
So come along and meet with the other CAMEO members. We look forward
to seeing you.

I can’t believe it
is this time again! We have had a great start to the year and the
group just keeps on growing in everyway!
We had a great Christmas party and really hope everyone enjoyed it!
We did however have to say our farewells to Sammie and Chrissy who
made the party their last group. I hope they enjoyed it as much as
the rest of us and know that they really will be missed!
We have a great new team of girls (Mums) helping us at the moment
and we really want to say thank you to them and all of you for
helping with ‘tidy up time’. You really are what makes our group
great!
We have recently started doing a craft session for the kids and this
has really been a big hit and so will continue as a weekly activity.
It is great to have all these new things going on and we all really
hope you are having as much fun as we are. Please do encourage all
your friends to come as the more the merrier!
We are a very informal group and welcome everyone with children aged
between 0 and 4 years. Tea, coffee and of course, biscuits, are
always available and the aim is to let your children have fun whilst
you relax and chat. We also have a story time that Anne organises,
the kids, as well as us, enjoy and appreciate it immensely! There
are more toys to play with and song time at the end for those who
can last the morning!
Dates for your diary:
We will be closed on the following dates:
31st March to 7th April – Easter Holidays
5th May – Council Elections
Pop in for a chat and a drink and sit back whilst your children wear
themselves out! We really look forward to meeting you so please do
come and let us know if you are new and we can show you exactly
where the coffee and biscuits are and you can eat and drink as much
as you like!
Hope to see you soon!
For further details of
meeting times please see the Village News publication.
Having got lost on Walton Heath in October, for our next stroll we
followed a map! We used part of a guided walk along the Hogsmill
from its source at Ewell to the River Thames at Kingston-on-Thames.
No, we did not attempt the whole route – we are strollers, not
trekkers! It was a damp and slightly chilly day, and the ground was
wet under foot, at times boggy, but we rose to the challenge and
resolved to follow the same route on another, bright sunny day. The
walk guide, published by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, provided
fascinating glimpses of the history of what was once one of the most
industrialised tributaries of the River Thames, apart from its role
in the work of many painters and its unique wildlife habitats.
In December we met for a convivial meal followed by a gentle stroll
to shake it down and in January we have often taken a break. This
year we thought “No, we’ll walk as usual”, and returned to Banstead
Woods, taking a completely different route using part of the
Banstead Countryside Walk along Chipstead Valley before crossing
into the Woods near the pond. It is some time since we visited these
woods, and it was interesting to note how much work has been done in
the interval, so much so that our leader failed to find his way at
one stage while planning the walk! Once again, the Nature Trail
guide is most informative.
We meet on the 4th Monday most months. In February we anticipate a
walk at Denbies, near Dorking. In March, due to the date of Easter,
we plan to stroll on the 3rd Monday, 21st March.
If you would like to join with us you would be more than welcome.
For further details of
meeting times please see the Village News publication.
We are having another fun filled
term at Rainbows (the youngest group at aged 5 - 7 in GirlGuiding).
We have made masks for our part in the youth production as one of
our members has written a story about the animals in the Kings wood,
they look fantastic. We are having a fireworks party with the
Brownies which should be fun, let's hope the wind doesn't blow and
the rain doesn't fall too heavily! At the end of term we are
planning a Christmas party which will also be a leaving party for
those moving up to Brownies.
Next term we will start to look at the new Rainbow programme which
has been introduced. The Rainbows will have a chance to choose some
of their activities from the Rainbow Jigsaws and also learn some new
songs.
If you would like your daughter to join our unit and for further details of meeting times, please see the Village News publication.
Guide Leader Shaz asked a new Guide
to write about her impressions of coming into Guides from Brownies.
This is what Sarah Young wrote.
“The first time I went to Guides they welcomed me into the Unit.
Every Friday night we go to the Church Hall; you get to know
everybody really well and the great leaders. You achieve loads of
badges, play games and have fun activities - it's fantastic. I am
so glad I joined.”
For further information, if you've thought about helping in any of the Sections: Rainbows, Brownies or Guides, please see the Village News publication.
There are about 17
boys at present; with two Cubs joining Scouts at Christmas.
We started the New Year with a Party and Games, Fitness Challenge
badge work and first aid practices over the next few weeks, with a
test in late February. Then it will be time for Mother's Day gifts
and into the annual Swimming Gala practice, ready for the Gala
mid-March. The Group's Race Night will be with us once again on
Saturday, 5th March in the Church Hall. Please support the Group,
by buying tickets or, if you can not attend on the night, by buying
horses and lucky Tricast squares in advance of the evening.
This time it was decided not to have fish and chips, but nibbles
will be provided. All this is in aid of a good cause and lots of
fun.
Once again, we look forward to a busy term, with a Games Night and
Easter Egg Hunt to end the Spring Term ready for an early Easter
Holiday.
For further details of meeting times please see the Village News publication.
Meetings for the Village
Fête take place each month leading up to the Village Fete on 2nd May
- Bank Holiday Monday. As usual, the Group will be running two or
more stalls which raise funds for the Group as a whole; please
support our stalls.
This term, the Scouts will be planning the activities and food which
they will need to organise for the Scoutabout event on the weekend
of 24th June this year. It takes place at Ardingly showground and
hundreds of Scouts & Guides from the South East take part. It comes
around every three years. It was very much enjoyed by the Scouts
last time and there will be new members to enjoy this fun event this
time round as well as a few of the older Scouts again. There will
be over 100 activities including a disco and radio station etc.
Let’s hope for good weather, so all the activities can take place.
We also extend a warm welcome to a new member on the committee, Mike
Buzwell, who is quite new to the village and has many years of
scouting behind him from the Epsom District, so we can draw on his
knowledge and experience. The committee has become quite reduced
recently and we are pleased to find a new volunteer with ideas and
enthusiasm.
Please see the Village
News publication for further details.

The 2005 outdoor season will soon be
upon us and our members would like to extend a warm welcome to
anyone who would like to join us for our
General Meeting at Lower Kingswood Social Club
22nd March (7.30 for 8pm) or our first ‘Roll-up’ of the season on
Tuesday 3rd May 2005
at
The Recreation Ground, Buckland Road
(6.00 p.m. for 6.30p.m. start)
New Members always made welcome. See Village News for further details.
A lot has happened since the last
newsletter went to print.
The Surrey Youth Development Service’s Youth Bus has attended Lower
Kingswood and youth workers carried out a consultation with young
people to establish what improvements could be made for teenagers in
the area. From this process a core group of young people emerged
willing to put in the commitment necessary to push the
consultation’s findings through to action and really make a
difference.
The group has named itself the Lower Kingswood Youth Committee and
have already busied themselves attending meetings with Borough and
County Councillors, Reigate & Banstead Parks & Leisure
representatives and working closely with the Residents Association.
Action prioritised from the consultation process has been to improve
the football facilities in the recreation ground by installing a
mini-pitch at the rear of the pavilion, to look at ways to access
funds for a ‘youth shelter’ for the recreation ground and to create
a piece of art work to brighten up either the rear of the pavilion
or the public toilets. All actions will first be proposed to the
Residents Association for consultation with the wider community.
The other key issue effecting young people in the area is transport.
It is hoped that in the near future the group will have accessed
taxi vouchers available to young people through the East Surrey
Transport Partnership (ESTP) via the Youth Service. In early 2005 we
hope to also be able to access the Buses4U project, again an ESTP
initiative, there will be more information on this later so watch
this space.
