From the Town Hall

12/03/2002

Being Mayoress, alongside my husband (Cllr. Stan Gates) as Mayor, for the past eight months, has been a wonderful experience. We have met so many people and visited so many interesting places that, when the Mayoral year finishes on 16th May 2002, we will have a great store of memories to look back on.

At the invitation of the other Surrey Mayors we have toured all ten other Boroughs and seen all the magnificent buildings and beautiful areas that comprise our lovely County.

What has impressed us so much is how many people are involved in the community, giving up their time to work as volunteers, helping those less privileged or less able to help themselves.

Another aspect that has impressed us is the amount of talent among our young people. We have been to many school concerts, exam awards and Duke of Edinburgh Awards and cannot praise these young people's achievements enough. We are very proud of them and of the excellent teaching staff that we have in the Borough.

We would like to thank all people who have helped us raise money for the Mayor's Charity so far, which for this year is The Children's Trust at Tadworth Court. Businesses, schools and individuals have been extremely generous.

During the last few months of his term of office the Mayor is having three fund raising events:

  • On 20th March there will be a Fashion Show at Toyota's prestigious new head office at Great Burgh.
  • On 13th April there will be a Golden Jubilee Ball at the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill
  • On 28th April there will be a Gala Concert at the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill.

For details, please contact the Mayor's Secretary on 01737-276051. Do come along and enjoy a night out with the Mayor and me and help to raise some money for our local charity, The Children's Trust.

We look forward to seeing you.
