The
start of 2005 has been very dramatic in weather terms and, as I write, the
school field looks very wintry. The children have been out in their warm clothes
having a lot of fun in the snow. They have created several huge snowball
sculptures in the middle of the football pitches that will last for weeks.
We were delighted to hear that Mrs Harris gave birth to a healthy girl, Jessie.
Our reception class teacher, Tanya Hollands, is pregnant and will be leaving us
on maternity leave at Easter. We send her and Sam our best wishes for the rest
of the term of the pregnancy, the birth and in the future.
Eleven schools in the area are holding a music festival for year 1 children in
March. This is to be held at The Beacon School. Children are busy practising
very hard for the occasion. Year 6 are still very involved with their
environmental project with Gatton Park and the Guildford Flames ice hockey team
are visiting the school to talk to year 6. The former Surrey and England
cricketer, Joey Benjamin, is coaching cricket in school. Year 5 are entered in a
football tournament organised by Fulham Football Club and classes 1 and 2 did
very well at the Chinthurst Tournament, beating Walton on the Hill Primary in
the plate final.
It is coming to the time of year when classes are looking forward to the
residential visits. Class 6 are off to France at the beginning of March and, at
the start of next term, years 4 and 5 will be going to Hindleap Warren and
Brenscombe Farm respectively. These trips are always very popular with the
children and are of immense educational value. Year 6 are going on a new trip
this year staying at the Hotel des Pelouses near Le Touquet and the trip will
focus on the culture and language rather than the World War 2 aspect as in
previous years.
I would very much like to thank all the parents for their continued support,
especially the very hard working FPTA committee members and the parents who
attend the meetings and help at social events. It is a pleasure to work with
such an enthusiastic group and the benefits their work has brought to the school
are amazing, including the Millennium Garden, the minibus, the sports pavilion.
Our next project, a joint effort between school Governors and FPTA is to renew
the climbing frame and to provide a lot more play equipment for children in both
playgrounds. The School Council, the class representatives in years 2 – 6, are
very involved in planning the project and will be speaking to members of the
FPTA to present their ideas.
If any members of the community feel they have skills to offer, or if you are a
parent interested in looking round the school, please do not hesitate to contact
the school office.
Part II.....
At the
beginning of March, Year 6 from Kingswood Primary School spent three very snowy
days at Stella Plage in northern France. They were accompanied by three members
of staff.
The children enjoyed various activities, including a visit to ‘Nausicaa’ – the
sea life centre in Boulogne. At the centre were many exhibits – one of which
allowed the children to touch the fish.
Also during the trip, they were shown how to make hand made French chocolates
and given time to buy chocolate rabbits etc. to bring home (one of the pictures
was taken at the chocolate factory).
Another activity was a trip to a mill powered by a water wheel where there was a
lesson about the process of milling wheat to make fine flour using old mill
stones. The children then made their own bread rolls which were baked in a wood
fuelled bread oven.
For many of the children the highlight of the trip was playing snowballs on the
beach at Berck Plage. The sun shone on the snow to provide a very unreal
situation for them.

Well here we are, well into 2005, but I am going to start with last year. We had
a very successful fund raising year and all our events were well attended. I
would like to thank everybody who supported us by attending or helping at these
events.
We have installed a new covered seat and table and also a play train and
carriage in the front playground, these have proved to be very popular and
hopefully will have been joined by a lorry and trailer by the time you read
this.
At this years Village Fête we will be running the beer tent, a nice change from
the burger stall!!
FPTA events at the school this year will include our Grand May Ball and our
Summer Fête. We will also be having another firework display, hopefully the
weather will be much kinder to us this year.
We look forward to seeing you all at some or all of our events.
