--- New Mobile Library Serving Lower Kingswood ---

A gleaming new mobile library is carrying a choice of over 2,000 books to provide access to the library service to the residents of Lower Kingswood on Monday afternoons.

The vehicle with its distinctive livery visits Holly Lodge from 2.40pm until 2.55pm.  It then stops at Buckland Road at the junction with Rookery Way from 3.05pm until 4pm on alternate Monday afternoons.  This stop is close to the shops and the school.

The service is free.  Library Manager Ian Grantham welcomes new members.  Documentary proof of address is needed to join the library.

The vehicle carries approximately 2,000 books.  The range covers adult fiction and non fiction, children's books and large prints.  There is also a collection of spoken word on cassette.  It is possible to obtain titles that are not on the shelves from other libraries.  The stock on the new vehicle has been overhauled and a large proportion of the titles on the vehicle have been replaced.

The new vehicle is 8.1 metres long and 2.3 metres wide, and has a powered lift of wheelchair users.

Make a note of the dates of the next visits to Holly Lodge from 2.40pm to 2.55pm and Buckland Road from 3.05pm to 4pm on these Monday afternoons: 1 March, 15 March, 29 March.

--- Banstead History Centre ---

Exactly on schedule the Banstead History Centre (based in Banstead Library) was officially opened on 14th February 2004 by Surrey County Councillors Diana Bowes and Angela Fraser and the event was attended by many of those involved in the year long project. These included staff from Surrey History Service & Surrey Libraries and representatives of local community organisations and interests.

The event was also attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey - Mrs Sarah Goad JP - who was particularly interested in one of the specially prepared historical displays which featured her family.

The centre exists to encourage interest in local and family history not just in Banstead but also Burgh Heath, Chipstead, Hooley, Kingswood, Lower Kingswood, Netherne-on-the-Hill, Preston, Tadworth, Tattenhams, Walton-on-the-Hill and Woodmansterne.

It includes an extensive range of resources including census records, parish registers, large scale maps, directories, illustrations and photographs. Equipment includes a microfilm and microfiche reader-printer and there is access to the internet on the library computer terminals.

Although the local history centre resources can be used at any time that the library is open; volunteer stewards are available to help in the use of resources and equipment…

1st and 3rd Tuesday 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Every Saturday 10:00am - 12:00noon
Telephone: 01737-351271
Fax: 01737-373693

If the stewards can't answer a question, they can refer to local experts or Surrey History Service and when the centre is not staffed written enquiries can be left.

If you would like to become a volunteer, please contact Banstead Library for further information or send an e-mail to either: libraries@surreycc.gov.uk or banstead.history@ntlworld.com.

--- Church Hall ---

Well 2005 is now really set in and hopefully you all enjoyed a happy Christmas time.

November 13th 2004 saw the Talent Show take place, with about sixty young people from the Village taking part. The Rainbows, Brownies, Maxixe Dancers, Kingswood Recorders, Encore and songs from Sarah Locke were in the programme, which helped to raise money towards a new sound system for the hall, for which the Committee thank all very much especially Sarah and Lisa from Encore.

Then in December many enjoyed the Christmas Band Concert by the South London Concert Band, held in the Wisdom of God Church. The money raised was divided between the Hall and Band.

The Hall is to be painted during the Easter Holidays, so it will be closed to all from March 27th until April 11th. Groups have been notified of this closure.

Several villagers have noted from the last issue of the Newsletter, that the Booking Secretary wishes to retire in September, but no volunteers have come forward. This is I’m afraid a voluntary position; if anyone is interested in this position please contact me or other members of the Committee.

The Committee thanks all who use the Hall for their continuing use and care of the premises.

Forthcoming Event

There will be a strawberry tea in aid of the Hall on Sunday, July 10th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. It will be held at the Hall in Buckland Road. Posters giving further details will put up around the village near to the time.

--- Book a bus by text in £700,000 New Bus Scheme for East Surrey ---

Bus passengers in East Surrey will soon be able to book journeys by text – after Surrey County Council has been awarded over £700,000 to provide a ground-breaking new type of public transport service for residents of Tandridge and Reigate & Banstead.

The cash - from the Department for Transport’s £20m Rural Bus Challenge Fund – will help provide a range of bus services throughout the rural parts of both districts.

Called Buses 4U, it will include:

an early morning, direct link to Gatwick airport for those living on the borders of Tandridge and East Grinstead,

a school run for children in either Caterham or Oxted,

and a totally new kind of request bus service throughout the day for everyone in parts of Reigate & Banstead and all of Tandridge.

Booking a journey will just be a telephone call or text message away once the scheme gets off the ground this summer. Requests are then relayed instantly to the vehicle’s driver via an on-board computer terminal. The unique texting ability is a first for Surrey and bookings can be made with as little as 30 minutes notice.

The new demand responsive service will operate from 9:00am until 11:00pm Mondays to Saturdays and will serve some of the Surrey areas, that have been affected by bus service reductions over the last few weeks.

Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council’s Executive Member for Transport, said: “This is tremendous news and will help many Surrey residents reach essential services at a time to suit them. Today’s technology is helping us bring new ways of transport provision and, with just one ‘phone call, will now allow them to choose when and where they travel.

“I am painfully aware that, in recent weeks and because of unprecedented rising costs, the County Council has had to take tough decisions about evening and weekend bus services. But we are currently carrying out a radical review of all public transport in the county and hope that Buses4U can be the first step in delivering transport in a much more targeted and dynamic way.”

Apart from the Monday to Saturday services already mentioned, Buses4U will also provide an hourly, timetabled service on Sundays to various locations in the Tandridge/west Kent area. This service is scheduled to connect with train services at Oxted and to take passengers to places of interest.

Using low-floored accessible 20-seater vehicles, the service will also cater for people with learning disabilities to attend a day centre in Redhill and to make independent journeys for work and leisure.
